Evaluation of My Final Products

Film Trailer - I have created a film trailer for the film Rise To Stardom, it is a documentary film about a school league basketball team from Poole High School. I feel that I have captured the emotion that I was going for when setting out to create this trailer. That was of family and support and showing a brotherhood and a bond between these boys, and I feel the music used has helped in the way that it is a very emotional song and is very melodic.

I decided to use player profiles in the trailer which is introducing the players to the audience. I took this idea from trailers such as More Than a Game and Trainspotting, this gives the character identity and also as it is a documentary film about a team, it is essential that you have an understanding of all the members of the team, to understand the journey. When deciding to have a voice over or not, I looked at many trailers to see what they had done before and then I had to decide what I wanted to tell people in my trailer, besides from the footage and the backgrounds with text. I decided that I wanted people to properly understand that this film is about a team and their journey to the championships, and I felt that I could not do this with just text on the screen so I decided to have a voice over but not scripted. I felt as this was a documentary film that even the voiceover should be natural and so I set up interviews with a few of the players from the team, and wrote out 5 vague questions to ask them and just let the camera roll. From this I not only had footage to use within the trailer of the players first hand in a room, with them  not focusing on the physical side of basketball, but the mental and emotion about how they felt. I also detached the audio and placed it over clips of basketball to capture the voice over effect. I did not want the voice over to be too strong and tell the whole story and leave nothing to the imagination, so I used it mainly to describe the players and their feeling towards the game and what they think they have achieved.

Film Poster - The film poster focuses mainly on the idea of basketball being the central point and what this team is centered around. So I have used a close up of a basketball that covers about a third of the area and have placed the film name over it along with its tag line, and other essential such as credits, logos and identity of the film. Then behind this I have a medium shot of one of the players from the basketball team, which is one of the main players and easily recognizable if you have watched the trailer as his interview is used a lot. I decided to have to almost fill the whole right hand side of the poster, so that people may easily recognize him and it also helps balance out the proportions with the oversized basketball and because the basketball covers part of his torso it also hints that he could be holding this ball out and therefore showing him reaching out and achieving his goals by reaching out to what he wants. The player is also wearing his basketball kit, again showing that he is dedicated to his team, and we know that it is not a one man team but he is part of it.

There is another tag line across the top which reads ‘ALL CHAMPIONS HAVE A START’ this tells the audience that within this film they do achieve and that this film is about there beginning. The line of photographs is an idea from looking at other film posters and decided to put it in as that part of the poster felt empty, and it also gave me a chance to put in some team photos. Showing the team posing under the basketball hoop in normal clothing and having fun, and a behind low angle long shot to show that these boys practicing and working hard. Then a close up shot of the basketball hoop from a low angle showing the strong ceiling lights which are the classic look of high school gyms. I have added a dark orange strip behind these photos, this is represent the similar colour of the basketball. The background was just a plain black background, but I felt that it needed something else that would represent the street part of this film. So I added a rough pattern to the background, this showed also that these boys are a bit rough in there basketball play and are not perfect and flawless but have a rough undertone and room to improve. I added the quote to add to the realism of the poster and only had a small space to fill so I decided on one word that would have the impact I required. I decided to do it in the same font and colour of all the other text in order for it to blend in and not become centre of attention but also it is quite a large as it is an honor and shows something to be proud of.

Film Magazine Cover - With my film Magazine cover I have used a team photo of the basketball team all in there basketball kit. I wanted to capture that classic look of the team photo. I cut out the players of the photo and made them another level so that I can have them overlaying the magazine film cover this is because it is a classic convention of magazines. This shows that the magazine doesn't need to show the whole of it name as it is known by its audience and a specialist magazine for film lovers that are existing customers and subscribe to the mag monthly. The background of the photo is a lightly coloured brick wall which works well with the whole magazine as it relates strongly to the film featured as it is about the rise and success of this team from the bottom, and the brick wall is not idealistic of success and wealth but normality and seems plain and boring. For my kickers at the side of the magazine I decided to be a bit witty with these and went for a gossip magazine style, by saying a well known celeb and them doing something ordinary and making it a big deal. I then went decided to include a cheesy header relating to the story, in this case I took the new movie with James Franco and Danny McBride called Your Highness, and it is set in the medieval times, and because they have done a few films together before, so I made the joke of Re-Knighted in stead of reunited. I also decided to include an Exclusive as magazines often have these to put them one up on other magazines and therefore sell more copies. I also have a few inserts that I have put into this magazine, these are the little extra bits that fill in gaps and give a little more information on what will be in the mag. I have gone for a classic insert which looks like a sticker, that has been placed over the magazine. These stand out and are often used on magazines, and I have added a shadow to it which distances it from the cover and reinforces the realism of the sticker effect. Next to this insert I have another which is just text with little images of film reels on either side, and is in a strong red fading to a darker red. For my skyline at the bottom of the cover I decided to use a plus sign to represent that this is extra bits and it is all very brief and just mentions film names of upcoming films, hinting at the idea there will be more information on these inside the magazine.
